Bilibili Relaunches International App to Challenge YouTube

Bilibili Inc. relaunched its international app and removed identity verification requirements to attract global creators and Gen Z users.

Bilibili Inc. relaunched its international video-sharing app in August 2026 as part of a strategic push to compete with YouTube and TikTok. To lower barriers for entry, the company eliminated previous requirements for users to provide passports or government identity documents to create accounts. The relaunch enables a shared content ecosystem between the platform's Chinese and international versions, leveraging Bilibili's 376 million monthly active users in China to attract high-profile Western creators such as MrBeast.

The company is establishing a global infrastructure by recruiting community managers in Los Angeles, London, Mexico City, São Paulo, Istanbul, and Tokyo. Bilibili is also developing an English-language website and a creator marketplace designed to connect international influencers with sponsored brand deals. While the app is currently live on Android, the iOS version is listed as coming soon.

To manage its global growth, Bilibili is implementing AI-powered content moderation systems through a team based in Singapore. Despite these efforts, the platform faces significant regulatory hurdles in Western markets, including the European Union's Digital Services Act. Analysts note that Bilibili may encounter data security and censorship scrutiny similar to the challenges faced by ByteDance Ltd.'s TikTok.
