Ireland Unveils €8.6 Billion Budget 2027 to Combat Cost-of-Living

The Government of Ireland announced Budget 2027, featuring significant tax cuts for middle earners, childcare subsidies, and a 6 per cent cap on public spending growth.

The Government of Ireland announced Budget 2027 on October 6, 2026, an €8.6 billion package designed to provide permanent cost-of-living relief. The budget balances high public investment with fiscal moderation, capping current expenditure growth at 6 per cent to avoid the overruns seen in previous years. Minister for Public Expenditure Jack Chambers also established a Public Spending Efficiency Taskforce to scrutinize day-to-day spending.

Key tax measures include a €1.3 billion personal income tax package that raises the standard rate cutoff by €2,500 to €46,500 and increases tax credits by €125. To support families, the government capped monthly childcare fees at €550, potentially saving parents over €1,000 annually. Social welfare recipients and pensioners will receive a €10 weekly increase, and a new €500 annual cost-of-disability payment was introduced for approximately 240,000 people.

Energy costs are addressed through a reduction in carbon tax on home heating oil and gas to approximately €48 per tonne, with a freeze on further increases for the remainder of the government's term. Other provisions include raising the national minimum wage to €14.94 per hour, increasing the Help to Buy scheme limit to €35,000, and allocating €15 million to support rural pubs. The budget also funds 1,000 new gardaí and 400 Defence Forces recruits.

While Taoiseach Micheál Martin described the measures as a comprehensive effort to ease public pressures, opposition members, including Sinn Féin's Pearse Doherty, argued the budget provides insufficient gains for lower earners and lacks a long-term strategy for climate change.
