NYC Comptroller Urges Anthropic to Pause $2 Trillion IPO
New York City Comptroller Mark Levine called on AI lab Anthropic to delay its planned public offering to address AI safety and governance risks.
New York City Comptroller Mark Levine has urged AI laboratory Anthropic to pause its planned U.S. initial public offering (IPO) until the company transparently addresses concerns regarding AI safety, governance, and the pace of development. In a letter to CEO Dario Amodei, Levine argued that the company should focus its energies on addressing "unprecedented risks" rather than proceeding "headlong" with the listing.
Anthropic is reportedly targeting a valuation of $2 trillion for a listing expected in November. Recent financial data from a pre-IPO meeting shows the company's third-quarter revenue reached $16.8 billion, representing a 45% increase over the $11.6 billion earned in the second quarter. While Anthropic claims to be profitable on an adjusted basis, some market observers have noted a deceleration in growth compared to previous periods.
New York City's public pension funds, which manage over $325 billion in assets, currently hold $7 million in exposure to Anthropic through private equity.
