Swedish Parliament Rejects Elisabeth Thand Ringqvist as Prime Minister

The Swedish parliament rejected Centre Party leader Elisabeth Thand Ringqvist as prime minister, leaving Moderate Party leader Ulf Kristersson as the next candidate to form a government.

The Swedish parliament rejected Elisabeth Thand Ringqvist, leader of the Centre Party, as prime minister on November 3. This vote marks the second of four possible ballots allowed before the country must call a new election. The rejection follows a period of post-election gridlock after the September election, which left centre-left opposition parties with a majority of 176 out of 349 seats, though the parties remain divided on government composition.

Thand Ringqvist had previously abandoned efforts to forge a centrist coalition and stated she does not aspire to lead the next government. This failure follows an earlier rejected bid by Social Democrats leader Magdalena Andersson on October 15.

Parliament's speaker announced that Moderate Party leader Ulf Kristersson, who has served as prime minister since 2022, is next in line to attempt to form a cabinet. While recent polls indicate increased support for the Moderates, it remains unclear if Kristersson can secure the necessary majority to end the deadlock.
