Idac Head Andrea Johnson Testifies Amid Corruption Probe

The head of the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC), Andrea Johnson, testified before the Madlanga Commission on July 21, 2026. Her appearance followed a previous postponement due to illness, prompting Commission chair Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga to describe her medical certificate as useless and lacking information.

Johnson faces allegations of abusing her power, interfering in sensitive Crime Intelligence investigations, and maintaining improper links with senior officer Feroz Khan. Specifically, it is alleged that she leaked a 2018 assault case docket to Khan before a warning statement was taken and attempted to shield him from prosecution. Other accusations include the fostering of a punitive internal culture and factional battles within IDAC. KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi further testified that top police officials are using the directorate to fight internal battles.

In response to the scrutiny, Johnson's legal representative stated she requested to be relieved of matters involving suspended Crime Intelligence head Dumisani Khumalo in June, with oversight transferring to Nicolette Bell. The National Prosecuting Authority noted that these allegations undermine the public trust and credibility of the anti-corruption body.

Separately, the IDAC oversight office ombud, Takalani Raulinga, announced in Pretoria that the office is investigating several high-profile complaints regarding possible law breaches. While Raulinga declined to confirm if a specific complaint was filed against Johnson, she stated that investigators are currently active.
