MSC Partially Restores Red Sea and Suez Canal Shipping

The Mediterranean Shipping Company is partially restoring shipping services through the Red Sea and Suez Canal for routes between Asia and Europe. The world's largest container carrier reached this decision following a security and operational review, joining Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd in partial rerouting plans.
Major shipping lines have largely avoided these waterways since late 2023 due to attacks by Yemen-based Houthis and conflict involving Iran. The return to these shorter routes is expected to increase market capacity and alleviate global port congestion, which has been worsened by high volumes and external shocks including drought and storms.
Parallel to these corporate shifts, officials from Iran and Oman are discussing an interim framework to resume shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
