Carlsberg Britvic Proposes Closing Marston's Brewery in 2027
Carlsberg Britvic plans to close Marston's Brewery and logistics site in Burton-upon-Trent by summer 2027, risking over 300 jobs due to declining cask ale demand.
Carlsberg Britvic has proposed the closure of the historic Marston's Brewery and its primary on-site logistics operation in Burton-upon-Trent, scheduled for summer 2027. The move puts approximately 300 to 310 jobs at risk.
CEO Paul Davies attributed the decision to a structural decline in the UK cask ale category, stating that volumes have more than halved in less than a decade. While the company intends to retain priority brands including Hobgoblin, McEwan’s, and Brooklyn, it will seek new owners for other regional and cask ale brands. The brewery and logistics site will remain operational during a consultation and transition period.
Camra chairman Ash Corbett-Collins condemned the announcement as an "absolute disgrace," arguing it shows a lack of care for the nation's drinkers and brewing heritage. This proposal follows previous closures within the business, including the Banks’s brewery in Wolverhampton.
