The Maryland State Board of Elections is urging residents to verify voting information through official channels to combat disinformation ahead of the 2026 gubernatorial election.
The Maryland State Board of Elections is urging residents to verify election information before sharing it ahead of the 2026 gubernatorial general election. Officials warned that false or misleading claims may target voting rights, election results, or the logistics of when, where, and how to vote.
The board distinguished between misinformation, which is shared unintentionally, and disinformation, which is spread deliberately to deceive. To combat these threats, the agency directed voters to use its official website and a dedicated disinformation portal for reporting suspicious claims.
State Administrator Jared DeMarinis emphasized that citizens can help ensure a secure process by relying on trusted sources. The board also established a Rumor Control Center to verify recent claims and safeguard the integrity of the upcoming vote.
