Joe Lonsdale Accuses AI Leaders of Manipulating Public Policy

Palantir co-founder and investor Joe Lonsdale accused leading artificial intelligence companies of using existential risk warnings as a tool to manipulate government policy. Speaking at the Reuters Momentum AI Austin event on September 25, Lonsdale argued that OpenAI and Anthropic are funding outside groups to advocate for stricter regulations to create an oligopoly and entrench their own market dominance.

These claims contradict recent public calls from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, and SpaceX head Elon Musk to slow the development of advanced AI models due to safety concerns. Lonsdale asserted that while safety is a legitimate concern, the current approach is a dangerous attempt to shape policy through fear.

Beyond AI, Lonsdale predicted that U.S. firms will likely acquire Ukrainian defense companies. He also addressed the use of autonomous weapons, stating that accountability for such systems must remain with military leaders. He cited a strike in Minab, Iran, which killed over 175 children and teachers, as a case for maintaining human responsibility. Lonsdale dismissed rumors of a potential senior leadership role at the Pentagon, stating his focus remains on his family and businesses.
