CMI Report Warns Management Skills Gap Threatens UK AI Leadership
The Chartered Management Institute reports that a lack of skilled managers and a leadership credibility gap are hindering the United Kingdom's artificial intelligence productivity goals.
The Chartered Management Institute released a report on June 10, 2026, warning that the United Kingdom risks failing to become a global leader in artificial intelligence due to a critical shortage of skilled managers. While British firms are investing heavily in AI technology, the research shows a failure to invest equally in leadership capabilities, resulting in only 5% of managers reporting transformational productivity gains.
The report identifies a significant credibility gap within organizations. Although 64% of senior leaders encourage AI experimentation, only 13% of managers believe those leaders actually use the tools themselves. This disconnect has led 70% of managers to prefer seeking advice from generative AI over their own superiors.
Chief Executive Ann Francke stated that the UK cannot achieve AI leadership if management capabilities are left behind. Jacky Wright, Chair of the CMI AI Advisory Council, characterized AI adoption as a management challenge rather than a purely technical one, noting that the most successful organizations invest in leadership and culture alongside technology.
