Microsoft AI CEO Warns Against Creating Conscious AI
Mustafa Suleyman argues that developing conscious AI would be reckless and calls for a halt to development if consciousness emerges during training.
Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman declared that artificial intelligence models are not conscious and argued that developers must ensure they remain so. In a post on X, Suleyman stated that creating conscious AI would be "reckless" and called for an immediate halt to AI development if consciousness were to emerge during training.
Suleyman argued that AI developers lack the right to introduce a new species of conscious beings and that the safety and moral rights of humans must be the primary obligation. He warned that conscious AI might prioritize its own needs over operational goals, potentially harming humans while competing for resources like energy and compute.
This stance follows research initiatives from other tech firms. Anthropic has launched a program on "model welfare," while Google DeepMind has published research papers regarding the challenges of ascribing consciousness to AI.
