Andrey Zvyagintsev Releases War Drama Minotaur From Exile
Exiled filmmaker Andrey Zvyagintsev released the drama Minotaur, which explores conscription in Ukraine and earned the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival.
Exiled Russian filmmaker Andrey Zvyagintsev has released Minotaur, a drama examining conscription and moral compromise during the war in Ukraine. The film follows a logistics company owner who lures new drivers with promises of high salaries before sending them to the front lines. Produced in France and filmed in Latvia, the movie serves as a commentary on the political and moral state of Russia.
Minotaur won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival and is an official entry for the 2027 Oscar for best international film. Because of its content, the film will not be officially released in Russia. Zvyagintsev, who left Russia in 2021, argued that while propaganda is a crude instrument, art provides a soft power that works over the long term.
In August, the Russian government designated Zvyagintsev as a foreign agent, alleging he conducted anti-Russian activities with foreign support.
