German Investor Confidence Falls in October ZEW Indicator

The ZEW Indicator of Economic Sentiment dropped to 28.1 in October, driven by high energy prices and domestic political uncertainty in Germany.

The Zentrum für Europäische Wirtschaftsforschung reported that the ZEW Indicator of Economic Sentiment fell 6.6 points to 28.1 in October, the first decline in investor confidence since April. ZEW President Achim Wambach attributed the drop to high energy prices resulting from conflict in the Middle East, which have increased production costs and pressured real incomes.

Wambach stated that "Private consumption and investment remain weak because of high energy prices: they put real incomes under pressure, increase production costs and keep inflation higher for longer." Other contributing factors include rising bond spreads in France and domestic political uncertainty following electoral gains by far-right parties.

Despite these headwinds, the International Monetary Fund forecasts Germany's full-year economic growth for 2026 at 1.3%, up from 0.2% the previous year. This growth is expected to be supported by strong exports and fiscal stimulus targeting infrastructure and defense. To combat climbing inflation, the European Central Bank has raised key interest rates twice during 2026.
