AFP Commissioner Links Political Rhetoric to Rise in MP Threats
Australian Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett warned that inflammatory political rhetoric is driving a surge in threats and abuse against elected officials.
Australian Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett linked inflammatory political rhetoric and imagery to a significant increase in threats and abuse directed at elected officials. The warning follows an alleged deliberate attack on independent MP Helen Haines outside her Wangaratta office, which resulted in Haines undergoing double leg amputation.
Commissioner Barrett reported a direct correlation between specific political conflicts and immediate spikes in abuse. She noted that while both men and women are targeted, women more frequently face threats of sexual violence. In response to the deteriorating safety environment, the Australian Federal Police conducted emergency safety briefings with parliamentarians.
Federal officials expressed concern over the balance between security and democratic accessibility. Labor minister Catherine King stated that the risk of an attack has been an ongoing issue for approximately five years, while Liberal frontbencher Ted O'Brien argued that maintaining open access to voters remains a cornerstone of democracy.
