Canada Prepares for Quebec Election as Separatists Lead Polls

Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture Marc Miller stated that the federal government is prepared for any outcome in the Quebec provincial election scheduled for October 5. The separatist Parti Québécois (PQ) currently leads in polling and has pledged to hold a referendum on independence during its first term, specifically after U.S. President Donald Trump leaves office in 2029.

PQ Leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon maintains this commitment despite polls indicating over 70 percent of Quebecers oppose separation. Miller described referendums as "immensely divisive" and "highly emotional," though he affirmed the federal government's readiness to work with whichever party forms the government.

As the campaign enters its 30th day, leaders are focusing on artificial intelligence and immigration. Charles Milliard, leader of the Quebec Liberal Party, criticized Plamondon's plan to reduce the number of temporary immigrants in Quebec from 500,000 to 250,000, claiming the move is stubborn and will harm the province. Plamondon has continued high-level meetings, including a visit with Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada, as advance polls prepare to open this Sunday.
