India Opposition Seeks Removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar

Opposition parties within the INDIA bloc and the youth-led Cockroach Janta Party are demanding the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar, the Chief Election Commissioner of India. The crisis follows reports that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi formally objected 14 times over 10 months to Kumar's decisions regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, including voter-registration forms and data control.

In response to the controversy, the Election Commission of India ordered a review of its voter-roll software on September 26 and established a compliance committee featuring an independent technology expert. The commission also changed its protocol, requiring local officials to visit voters flagged for discrepancies rather than requiring voters to report to government offices. While the commission maintains that internal differing views are normal and final decisions were unanimous, opposition parties allege the lists were manipulated to benefit the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Pressure on Kumar intensified after former Kerala Chief Secretary Jiji Thomson alleged that Kumar offered him a BJP candidacy for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections during a 2016 flight. Rahul Gandhi and other opposition leaders have used these claims to argue that Kumar acted as a recruiter for the ruling party.

Nationwide protests by Congress workers on September 26 led to the detention of Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi and the use of tear gas in Manipur. The INDIA bloc is scheduled to meet in New Delhi on September 30 to coordinate a formal removal motion against Kumar for both Houses of Parliament. Additionally, the Cockroach Janta Party has threatened a nationwide agitation starting October 2 in Mumbai if Kumar does not step down.
