Nigeria to Close Owerri Airport for Runway Rehabilitation

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria will close Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport for 25 days starting October 20 to repair and extend the runway.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) will temporarily close the runway at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri for approximately 25 days starting October 20, 2026. The closure facilitates essential rehabilitation, resurfacing, and an extension of the runway to accommodate wide-body aircraft.

Heavy rainfall caused surface cracking and potholes, necessitating the intervention. The project is a joint partnership between the federal government and the Imo State government under Governor Hope Uzodinma. Officials stated the works are critical to restore the runway to a safer operational condition before the anticipated surge in passenger traffic during the Christmas season.

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo noted that the closure is necessary to ensure aviation safety and support economic development in the South-East region. While initial reports described the closure as a proposal pending final confirmation, subsequent updates confirmed the intervention following agreements between FAAN and the Imo State government. Passengers are advised to coordinate with their airlines for rescheduling or alternative travel arrangements.
