Volkswagen Partners With NXP for Software-Defined Vehicle Architecture

Volkswagen Group partnered with NXP Semiconductors to supply microcontrollers for a new software-defined vehicle architecture debuting in 2027.

The Volkswagen Group entered a strategic partnership with NXP Semiconductors to supply S32K5 microcontrollers for a new software-defined vehicle architecture. Announced at the International Suppliers Fair in Wolfsburg, the agreement focuses on using these microcontrollers as core processors for zonal controllers that manage chassis, safety, body, comfort, and lighting systems.

This architecture was developed by RV Tech, a joint venture between Volkswagen Group and Rivian. By consolidating multiple functions into fewer electronic control units, the technology aims to reduce overall hardware complexity. The new system will be implemented across vehicles from both Volkswagen and Rivian, with the first models scheduled for release in 2027.

Karsten Schnake, a member of the Volkswagen Brand Board of Management, stated the partnership allows the company to take a more active role in the semiconductor value chain. Werner Tietz, responsible for Group Research and Development, noted that the architecture provides a scalable foundation for multiple brands within the group.
