Nirmala Sitharaman Sets 2030 National Debt Target
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced a goal to limit India's national debt to 50 percent of GDP by 2030.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced on Monday in Tiruchirappalli that the Indian government aims to limit national debt to 50 percent of GDP by 2030. Speaking after an event at Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College, she stated that international organizations have recognized India's disciplined debt management following the COVID-19 pandemic.
Sitharaman highlighted the government's use of a dedicated ministerial group since 2014 to maintain price stability. This strategy includes supply-chain management and export restrictions on rice to protect consumers while maintaining the Minimum Support Price for farmers. She also noted the role of the Reserve Bank of India in preventing excessive rupee volatility without fixing a specific currency value.
When questioned about electoral roll irregularities and rising debt in Tamil Nadu, Sitharaman declined to comment on the state's financial position. She stated that such issues are state-level matters that should be debated in the state assembly or addressed through the courts.
