Rajya Sabha Chair Directs Minister to Convey Opposition Demands

Rajya Sabha Chairman C P Radhakrishnan directed Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju to convey the Opposition's demand for Union Home Minister Amit Shah to make a statement in Parliament. The demand centers on a July 20 lathi-charge incident involving police action against demonstrators protesting the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) paper leak in New Delhi.

Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress President and Leader of Opposition, led the push for the Home Minister's presence, arguing that the government was avoiding genuine questions. He stated that the government should apologize to the affected students and their families rather than asking the students to seek forgiveness. The proceedings on Thursday were marked by multiple disruptions, slogans, and adjournments as Opposition members engaged in heated exchanges with the Treasury benches.

Opposition leaders, including CPI MP P Sandosh Kumar, described the Chairman's directive to the Parliamentary Affairs Minister as a victory. Kharge indicated that the future functioning of the House depends on the nature and timing of the Home Minister's response, maintaining that a statement is necessary for the House to run peacefully.
