Shanghai Opens Ten National Science Infrastructures to Public Use

The Government of Shanghai opened ten national key scientific infrastructures to the public to accelerate industrial and technological innovation.

The Government of Shanghai announced on July 9, 2026, the opening of ten national key scientific and technological infrastructures to public use. According to municipal reports, the initiative aims to drive the integration of industrial sectors with science and technology innovation throughout the city, lowering the threshold for private enterprises and academic researchers to access high-end equipment.

Among the available facilities are the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility and the National Facility for Protein Science in Shanghai. The latter includes a specialized joint laboratory for AI-powered protein manufacturing located in Pudong. These centers provide broad access to high-level research tools, allowing industrial partners to utilize advanced imaging and molecular analysis to catalyze regional technological advancement.

By transitioning these state-funded assets into shared-use hubs, the city intends to foster a more collaborative innovation ecosystem. This move aligns with broader strategic goals to increase China's science self-reliance by streamlining the path from laboratory discovery to industrial application. The initiative allows firms to prototype and test new materials and pharmaceuticals without the prohibitive cost of building proprietary facilities, potentially accelerating the development of biotech and semiconductor technologies within the Shanghai hub.
