Spain Allows US Extradition Request for James Chambers to Proceed

The Government of Spain has decided to allow a United States extradition request for James Chambers to proceed through the Spanish court system. Chambers, a multimillionaire heir to Cox Enterprises and donor to pro-Palestinian causes, was detained in Ibiza on July 10 and is currently held in pre-trial detention in Madrid.

The Trump administration alleges that Chambers laundered $7.5 million to support Hamas. In contrast, his defense maintains the funds were used for humanitarian projects in Gaza and a Tunisian football club. The U.S. Department of Justice has declined to comment on the specific charges, which the defense identifies as money laundering and conspiracy to commit disorderly conduct.

The decision has created friction within Spain's Socialist-led government. Minister of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration Elma Saiz described the move as "purely procedural," while left-wing coalition partners Sumar and Podemos have labeled the request as political persecution. Ione Belarra, secretary-general of Podemos, claimed the government chose to keep Chambers imprisoned by allowing the process to move forward.

Legal proceedings are currently stalled after Chambers' lawyer, Baltasar Garzón, filed for asylum in Spain. This filing legally halts the extradition process until the asylum application is resolved.
