David Eby Shuffles B.C. Cabinet After Minister's Cancer Diagnosis

Premier David Eby announced a cabinet shuffle on August 14, 2026, after Finance Minister Brenda Bailey disclosed an early-stage, treatable cancer diagnosis. The restructuring ensures that provincial budget preparations, which enter an intense phase in September, proceed without delay. This continuity is critical as the government manages a projected $13.3 billion deficit for 2026-27 and rising public sector salary costs.

Under the new arrangement, Josie Osborne, previously the Health Minister, assumes the finance portfolio. Ravi Kahlon, the Minister of Jobs and Economic Growth, moves to the Health Ministry. Energy and Climate Solutions Minister Adrian Dix will serve as the interim lead for the Jobs and Economic Growth Ministry during Bailey's absence.

Bailey expects to return to work in October when the legislature reconvenes, following a six-week treatment period. Upon her return, she will transition into the Jobs and Economic Growth role, a position she previously held. Bailey described the shuffle as an "elegant solution" that allows her to return to a familiar file without slowing the budget process.
