Opposition Parties Condemn Proposed FCRA Bill Amid Government Deferment

The Government of India has deferred the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) Amendment Bill during the current monsoon session of Parliament. This pause comes amid significant pushback from various political and religious groups who argue the legislation would harm charitable institutions and religious organizations relying on foreign funding.

In Shillong, the Voice of the People Party (VPP) welcomed the deferment. VPP President Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit led a delegation to meet Governor C.H. Vijayashankar on August 12 to submit a reminder memorandum to Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The VPP maintains that the government must conduct wider consultations to address public apprehensions, particularly among Christian organizations in Northeast India.

Simultaneously, Samajwadi Party MP Akhilesh Yadav criticized the bill in New Delhi, alleging the legislation is designed to suppress minorities and serve the government's own interests. During his remarks, Yadav also challenged the government's infrastructure record, citing potholes on expressways and waterlogging at airports as evidence of poor project quality.
