UK Government Launches Opt-In Air Pollution Alert Service

The Government of the United Kingdom launched an opt-in air pollution alert service on August 27, 2026, to notify citizens via SMS or email when local air quality is forecast to spike. The service allows users to monitor five major pollutants—particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), nitrogen dioxide, ozone, and sulphur dioxide—at specific locations such as homes or workplaces.

Environment Secretary Dame Angela Eagle stated the initiative aims to provide clear, reliable information to help the public protect their health. The service specifically targets vulnerable populations, including individuals with asthma and cardiovascular conditions, to help them reduce exposure to polluted air.

Chief Medical Officer for England Professor Sir Chris Whitty described air pollution as a solvable health problem that can lead to poor pregnancy outcomes, childhood lung disease, and long-term conditions such as heart disease and stroke. This alert system is part of a broader Environmental Improvement Plan, which may include simplified industrial permits and stricter emissions standards for wood-burning appliances.
