World Media Summit Adopts AI Consensus in Beijing

Media executives and officials at the 7th World Media Summit in Beijing adopted a consensus on the responsible use of AI in global journalism.

Nearly 500 representatives from 112 countries and regions gathered in Beijing for the 7th World Media Summit, themed Media in the Intelligent Age: From Consensus to Action. During the opening ceremony, participants adopted the 7th World Media Summit Beijing Consensus, which advocates for the inclusive and responsible application of artificial intelligence within the global media industry.

Xinhua News Agency, a co-host of the event, launched the Global Media Initiative for the Joint Development of AI Application Standards. Joined by 22 initial participants, including Russia's TASS News Agency and South Africa's Independent Media, the initiative seeks to develop validated AI standards over two years to protect data security and uphold media ethics.

Media executives at the summit emphasized that human oversight must remain central to news production. Fabrice Fries, Chairman of Agence France-Presse, stated that AI is an efficient tool but not a substitute for journalists, noting that his agency prohibits the generation of content via AI. Sumeyra Teymur, CEO of Haberler.com, argued that human verification is essential to prevent the spread of deepfakes and fabricated news, while calling for increased international cooperation to combat cross-border misinformation.
