Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent Develops Deficit Reduction Plan

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is developing a plan to reduce the federal deficit, though the proposal faces significant opposition within the Republican-controlled Congress. House and Senate Republicans have already abandoned planned spending cuts totaling hundreds of billions of dollars, citing concerns over voter backlash in swing districts.

Bessent has proposed creating a fraud task force to save hundreds of billions of dollars. However, deficit hawks and critics argue that fraud prevention is insufficient to offset the national debt, which has reached $40 trillion. The Congressional Budget Office estimates a $2.1 trillion deficit for the current fiscal year, marking a $200 billion increase over the previous year.

Fiscal pressures are mounting as the White House seeks a $500 billion increase in defense spending for next year. Additionally, the House has advanced a $95 billion measure to fund the Iran War without accompanying spending cuts. Democratic critics, including House Budget Committee member Brendan Boyle, have dismissed the Treasury Secretary's efforts as an attempt to use a tired Republican playbook that burdens the middle class.
