Democrats Seek to Expel Haley Stevens After Republican Endorsement
House Democrats are moving to expel Representative Haley Stevens after she endorsed Republican Mike Rogers over Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan.
House Democratic leaders are calling for the expulsion of Representative Haley Stevens from the House Democratic caucus after she endorsed Republican Mike Rogers for the U.S. Senate in Michigan. Stevens, who lost the Democratic primary to Abdul El-Sayed, announced her decision to split her ticket less than 48 hours before the midterm elections.
Stevens based her endorsement of Rogers on El-Sayed's refusal to denounce an anti-Semitic commercial claiming Jewish people were taking money from Michigan families, as well as his refusal to retract criticisms of Israel. El-Sayed dismissed the political spectacle, stating that the issues did not matter and refocusing his campaign on the economic struggles of Michigan voters.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries stated that Stevens isolated herself from the caucus and indicated the party would discuss appropriate next steps upon their return. Representative Jim Clyburn, a former mentor to Stevens, also voiced support for her expulsion, arguing that the move prioritizes the party's people over the politics practiced in Michigan. Other Democratic figures reacted more aggressively, with Representative Robert Garcia telling Stevens to lawyer up, while some commentators used sexist rhetoric or questioned her mental stability.
