Pfizer Acquires Metsera to Combat Declining COVID-19 Revenues

Pfizer acquired Metsera to enter the obesity drug market as the company faces falling COVID-19 revenues and upcoming patent expirations.

Pfizer is restructuring its product pipeline through internal development and strategic acquisitions to offset a revenue decline following the drop in demand for COVID-19 treatments. As part of this effort, the company acquired Metsera, a biopharmaceutical firm, to enter the obesity treatment market with a focus on potential oral drugs and monthly dosages.

The company faces significant financial headwinds due to upcoming patent expirations. Pfizer will lose patent protection for Ibrance in 2027, followed by Eliquis and Vyndaqel in 2028. These losses contribute to a share price that has dropped 51.3% over the last three years.

For 2025, Pfizer management projects revenue between $61 billion and $64 billion, a slight variation from the $63.6 billion reported last year. The company expects adjusted earnings per share of $3 to $3.15 this year, which remains sufficient to cover its annual dividend of $1.72 and maintain a 6.7% dividend yield.
