Russia and North Korea Expand Economic and Media Ties
Russia and North Korea are strengthening their strategic partnership through agricultural exports to Pyongyang and a coordinated state-media information agreement.
Russia and North Korea are expanding their strategic partnership through a combination of economic cooperation and coordinated information warfare. In April 2026, Vladimir Saldo, the governor of the Russian-occupied Kherson region in Ukraine, met with North Korean Ambassador Sin Hong Chol to discuss exporting agricultural products to address food shortages in North Korea. Saldo specifically identified the delivery of processed food products, flour, and vegetable oil as the primary path forward for cooperation.
This economic outreach follows a media partnership established on March 28, 2026. The Russian state-run news agency TASS signed an agreement with the Korean Central News Agency to coordinate information exchanges and combat what both agencies termed fake news. This collaboration utilizes the global reach of TASS to improve the international image of Pyongyang and justify the deepening alliance to the North Korean public. Kim Pyong-ho, president of the Korean Central News Agency, described the agreement as a means to deepen friendship between the two nations.
