US and UK Launch Emergency Preparedness Initiatives
The United States and United Kingdom launched separate programs to prepare military bases and citizens for large-scale disruptions to essential services.
The United States Department of Defense and the British government have initiated separate programs to prepare for large-scale disruptions to essential services caused by state-sponsored cyberattacks and hybrid warfare. Both nations identified Russia, China, and Iran as the primary sources of instability.
Under a program called FORTRESS, the Pentagon now requires major military installations in the continental U.S. to sustain essential operations independently for 90 days. The initiative focuses on self-sufficient power, water, fuel, and communications, utilizing microgrids and portable nuclear reactors to disconnect bases from the civilian grid. Pentagon chief spokesperson Sean Parnell emphasized that electricity is critical for maintaining military command structures.
Simultaneously, the British government launched the Be Ready campaign, which urges citizens to stockpile three days of food, water, and cash. While the government has not declared an imminent war, Defence Secretary Wes Streeting warned that adversaries could possess the capacity to attack by 2030.
