Nationwide Building Society Cuts 275 Jobs After Virgin Money Merger

Nationwide Building Society is cutting 275 jobs to remove operational duplication following its 2.9 billion pound acquisition of Virgin Money.

Nationwide Building Society announced on Wednesday that it will cut 275 jobs as part of the integration of Virgin Money. The lender completed the acquisition of the commercial high street bank in October 2024 for 2.9 billion pounds.

The reductions target the retail division, including mortgage roles, as well as human resources, finance, communications, customer operations, and the chief operating officer's office. These cuts follow a previous round of 600 job losses announced in June. The lender stated the move aims to simplify operations and remove duplication, while explicitly denying that the cuts are linked to the use of artificial intelligence.

Nationwide pledged that no customer-facing staff are at risk and maintains a commitment to keep 700 branches open until at least 2030. The organization stated that it is supporting affected employees through retraining and redeployment.
