Reform UK Seizes Essex Council and Northern Strongholds

Reform UK won overall control of Essex County Council and secured majorities in several northern councils during the May 2026 local elections.

Reform UK achieved historic victories in the May 2026 local elections, most notably ending 25 years of Conservative rule by seizing overall control of Essex County Council. The party also secured majority control in Sunderland, Gateshead, and South Lanarkshire, while winning every seat in Tendring. Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, described the results as a turquoise wave that dismantled both the traditional red and blue walls of British politics.

In Essex, former council leader Kevin Bentley lost his seat to Reform candidate Andrew Harding. Bentley warned the incoming administration that managing critical services requires a concrete plan rather than slogans. Kemi Badenoch, leader of the Conservative Party, acknowledged that the results were difficult for her party.

Beyond the county council victories, Reform UK expanded its reach into district councils. In the Cherwell District, the party gained six seats. This included a victory by Paul Jeffreys in the Banbury Hardwick seat, where he defeated Labour incumbent Andrew Drichton. Jeffreys attributed his win to voter frustration over local issues and stated he would prioritize waste management and street cleaning improvements.
