Oregon Commission Awards $250,000 for America 250 Celebrations
The America 250 Oregon Commission awarded nearly $250,000 to 80 organizations to celebrate the 250th anniversary of American independence.
The America 250 Oregon Commission has awarded nearly $250,000 in grants to 80 organizations across four funding rounds to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence. Established under a 2024 law, the commission split funding equally between urban and rural recipients to ensure a broad geographical reach for projects highlighting Oregon's unique history, culture, and art.
Funded initiatives include the second annual Bigfootstock festival in Dallas, a community time capsule at the Heritage Station Museum, and veteran therapy retreats provided by the Central Oregon-based nonprofit Warrior Impact. These grants support a diverse array of projects, ranging from those that honor veterans and Oregon's tribes to those promoting civics and history education.
Beyond these grants, the commission is coordinating larger commemorative events. These include a simultaneous nationwide reading of the Declaration of Independence at the Oregon Historical Society on July 8 and a Passport to History and Democracy event at the Oregon State Capitol. Commission chair Kerry Tymchuk noted that the wide variety of unique ideas supported by the commission reflects the state's official motto, she flies with her own wings.
