Hackney Council Member Faces Backlash Over French Protest Comments
Florence Schechter faces a council review after urging Britons inspired by French unrest to join an anti-austerity march in London.
A political dispute has emerged at Hackney Council after Florence Schechter, a Green Party cabinet member, urged people inspired by protests in France to participate in an anti-austerity march in London. The demonstration is scheduled for October 27, moving from Victoria Embankment to Downing Street ahead of the autumn Budget.
Hackney Labour condemned the remarks as careless and irresponsible, arguing that referencing French unrest—marked by looting and the burning of public buildings—could inflame divisions and encourage violence within the United Kingdom. In response, Hackney Labour referred the matter to the council's chief executive and monitoring officer for a formal review.
Schechter defended her comments, stating that addressing those inspired by protests is not an endorsement of violence. She argued that peaceful protest remains an essential tool to ensure the government acts urgently regarding spending cuts and austerity measures.
