King Charles III Declines Meeting With Jamaican Reparations Delegation

The Government of Jamaica petitioned King Charles III for slavery reparations in London, but the monarch declined to meet with the delegation.

The Government of Jamaica dispatched a diplomatic delegation to London to petition King Charles III for slavery reparations. Led by Culture Minister Olivia Grange, the mission requested that three specific questions concerning the transatlantic slave trade be referred to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council. Grange described the effort as a "milestone moment" for the nation.

King Charles III declined to meet with the delegation. Royal officials stated that the monarch's schedule made a meeting impractical and clarified that the king lacks the constitutional authority to decide on reparations, as those decisions fall under the jurisdiction of the British government.

This diplomatic push occurs as Jamaica manages significant internal institutional crises. Police Commissioner Kevin Blake recently dissolved the Counter Terrorism and Organized Crime division following a cocaine scandal. Additionally, the United States government revoked visas for several Jamaican officials, citing frustrations over the handling of the security affair. These events coincide with efforts by Prime Minister Andrew Holness to shift the national brand toward safety and technology.
