UK Unions Demand Tax Threshold Reversal from John Healey

Unions that donate to the Labour Party are meeting with Chancellor John Healey on September 17 to demand a reversal of frozen income tax thresholds ahead of the October budget. The current lowest threshold of £12,570 has remained static, creating fiscal drag that pushes lower-paid workers into higher tax brackets as inflation drives wage increases.

Sharon Graham, leader of the Unite union, has pressured Andy Burnham to support these changes and described the government's cut to the winter fuel allowance as a "disgrace". While Unite focuses on personal tax thresholds, the Unison union is advocating for increased taxes on large technology companies to fund public sector investment and green energy, alongside research into shifting the tax burden from income to wealth.

The Institute for Fiscal Studies reports that these freezes are expected to generate £39 billion annually by 2029-30, a move that effectively absorbs minimum wage increases.
