Job Switchers See Wage Growth Rise Over Job Stayers
Job switchers in the United States are seeing a renewed wage premium over those who stay in their roles despite a sluggish overall hiring environment.
Wage growth for workers who change jobs is increasing again in 2026, reinstating a job-switching premium over employees who remain in their current positions. Data from the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta shows that year-over-year wage growth for job switchers has remained steady at 4.4% for four consecutive months, while growth for those who stay put dropped to 3.5% in September.
Economists indicate that while this trend suggests improving prospects for job seekers, the broader labor market remains constrained. The quits rate has stagnated between 1.9% and 2%, a significant decrease from the Great Resignation era, and total job openings remain well below the peaks seen in 2022.
Experts note that while switching jobs provides a critical tool to combat inflation, the opportunities to do so are limited. The rise of AI is further reshaping white-collar sectors, making job hopping more difficult for many workers even as the financial incentive for doing so returns.
