Italy Extends Diesel Tax Relief Through August 25

The Government of Italy has extended a diesel tax relief measure through August 25 to shield consumers from soaring fuel prices. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced the decision during a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, maintaining a tax reduction of 17 cents per liter, including value-added tax.

This measure builds on previous tax cuts introduced in March, which were implemented after conflict in Iran drove up global oil costs. While diesel is covered under the current extension, gasoline remains excluded from the relief program.

Finance Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti is scheduled to address lawmakers on Wednesday. During his appearance, he is expected to request additional budget flexibility from the European Union to support the country's energy and military expenditures.
