Microsoft Announces Maia 300 AI Chips to Reduce Nvidia Reliance

Microsoft Corporation denied reports of Azure layoffs while unveiling the Maia 300 AI chip to increase computing efficiency and decrease dependence on Nvidia.

Microsoft Corporation denied reports that its Azure cloud unit is implementing layoffs or cost-cutting measures during an artificial intelligence overhaul. A company spokesperson stated that Azure leadership has not directed teams to develop such plans.

Simultaneously, the company announced the Maia 300, the third generation of its custom AI chips. Microsoft plans to deploy millions of these chips next year to support internal AI services. The hardware utilizes a chiplet design featuring 2-nanometer and 3-nanometer technology from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.

Microsoft claims the Maia 300 delivers 40 percent more computing per megawatt than leading GPU-based systems. Rani Borkar, president of Azure hardware systems and infrastructure, stated the technology is "basically delivering more intelligence for every watt, every dollar, and every byte of memory by optimizing across the entire system." The move is intended to reduce the company's reliance on Nvidia in the AI computing market.
