JD Wetherspoon Bans Meta Smart Glasses in UK Pubs

JD Wetherspoon banned Meta smart glasses and other devices capable of recording video, photos, or audio from all 800 of its pubs across the United Kingdom. The pub chain stated the devices enable "surreptitious surveillance" and breach a general code prohibiting the filming of customers or employees without their permission.

Company representatives compared the ban to existing efforts to stop the audible playing of videos in venues, describing the use of smart glasses as an invasion of personal space. The chain emphasized that while it uses CCTV for security under strict data legislation, the recording capabilities of wearable tech violate common sense and privacy.

Meta Platforms Inc. defended the technology, noting that the glasses include a notification light to alert others when recording is active. A spokesperson for the company argued that the devices provide essential features like live translation and hands-free calls, and offer critical assistance for individuals who are low-sighted or hard of hearing.
