Australian Study Finds High AI Adoption and Cultural Bias Risks

A joint report from the Australian National University and Google reveals half of Australian adults use AI while 80% fear its political impact.

A report published by the Australian National University and Google reveals that nearly half of Australian adults now use artificial intelligence. The study, which utilized surveys of over 3,500 adults and interviews with organizational leaders, indicates a strong public demand for oversight, with approximately two-thirds of participants believing the government is responsible for governing generative AI usage.

Concerns regarding the technology are widespread, particularly in the political sphere. The report finds that 80% of Australians are worried about the use of generative AI in politics, citing the spread of misinformation and the potential for leaking sensitive political data.

Lead author Jessica Herrington warned that the current reliance on U.S.-developed models, such as ChatGPT and Google Gemini, introduces cultural biases based on American-centric values. Herrington advocated for government investment in domestic, specialized AI models tailored to Australian demographics and suggested that government partner with industry to manage these developments.
