Harris Demands Probe Into Two Fatal ICE Shootings
Kamala Harris called for independent investigations after ICE agents fatally shot two men in Houston and Biddeford within one week.
Former Vice President Kamala Harris demanded independent and transparent investigations into two fatal shootings by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents occurring within one week. The first incident took place on July 7 in Houston, Texas, where agents shot and killed Lorenzo Salgado-Araujo. ICE officials claim Salgado-Araujo rammed an agency vehicle and attempted to run over an officer, prompting the officer to fire in self-defense.
On July 13, ICE agents fatally shot Joan Sebastian Guerrero in Biddeford, Maine. The Department of Homeland Security stated agents were conducting surveillance on a different migrant when Guerrero attempted to flee in a vehicle, leading an officer to fire for public safety. DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin confirmed Guerrero was not the intended target of the operation.
In Houston, District Attorney Sean Teare announced a parallel investigation to the primary FBI probe, asserting that those who commit crimes do not get to hide behind a badge. Houston Mayor John Whitmire and Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez also called for an objective examination of the facts. Legal experts noted that Teare may face challenges due to the Supremacy Clause, which provides immunity to federal agents acting within their duties.
