FSSAI Bans Nestle Dairy Whitener After Unsafe Hotel Sample
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India ordered the immediate halt of Nestle Low Fat Dairy Whitener sales after a New Delhi hotel sample failed safety tests.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) prohibited the sale of Nestle India's Low Fat Dairy Whitener on October 3, 2026. The regulator issued a formal notice to Bharat Hotels Ltd., the operator of The Lalit hotel in New Delhi, after a sample collected approximately three months prior was declared unsafe and substandard under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
Nestle India disputed the findings, asserting the product is safe and complies with all regulatory requirements. The company argued that the FSSAI laboratory reports failed to distinguish between phosphorus that occurs naturally in milk-based ingredients and phosphorus added as a food additive. Nestle India is currently providing data to authorities to demonstrate that the product remains within prescribed limits for added phosphorus on an as consumed basis.
Vivek Shukla, CEO of The Lalit Suri Hospitality Group, confirmed that the hotel immediately discontinued use of the product and removed all packets from its operations upon receiving the communication. Bharat Hotels Ltd. has been granted the opportunity to challenge the Food Analyst's report and file an appeal.
