Global Tibet Protests Mark One Month Since Lobga Rangzen Death

Tibetans and international supporters held coordinated demonstrations in New York City and Dharamshala, India, to commemorate the one-month anniversary of the death of activist Lobga Rangzen. Rangzen self-immolated in front of the United Nations Headquarters on July 2, 2026, to demand a free and independent Tibet.

In New York, the Tibetan National Congress organized a day of action including full-body prostrations from the Brooklyn Bridge to Times Square and a candlelight vigil marching to the United Nations. Students for a Free Tibet performed a die-in representing 171 Tibetans who have self-immolated since 2009. Protesters called for the repeal of China's Ethnic Unity Progress Law and the passage of the Assuring the Future of Tibet Act.

Simultaneously, more than 1,000 Tibetans in exile, including officials from the Central Tibetan Administration, held a candlelight march from McLeod Ganj to Bhagsunag in Dharamshala. Participants urged the United Nations to resolve the Tibet issue. Some leaders, including former parliamentarian Namgyal Dolkar, argued that the movement should abandon efforts at dialogue with the Chinese government and pivot toward demanding complete independence due to a lack of response from Beijing.
