South Korea Nears US$1 Trillion Annual Export Milestone

South Korea is on track to reach US$1 trillion in annual exports driven by record semiconductor demand for AI infrastructure.

The South Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy reports that South Korea is positioned to become the fourth nation to reach US$1 trillion in annual exports, joining Germany, the United States, and China. Cumulative exports through August 2026 reached US$693.3 billion, with August alone seeing a 68.7% year-on-year increase to US$98.25 billion.

Growth was primarily fueled by a record semiconductor surge, with shipments hitting US$46.65 billion in August—a 209% year-over-year increase. This boom accounts for 47.5% of total monthly goods exports and is driven by high demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure from hyperscalers such as Google and Amazon. While exports rose in most major markets, including China and the US, shipments to the Middle East fell 15% due to geopolitical risks.

Despite the chip boom, the economy faces volatility. Automobile exports fell 29.8% in August, and the Bank of Korea raised its base rate to 3% to combat core inflation. Trade Minister Kim Jung-kwan noted that a 20% growth in non-semiconductor items suggests the nation's export base is broadening, though some economists warn that a sudden stall in chip demand could destabilize the economy.
