Oxford Congestion Charge Projected to Generate £7.7 Million Surplus

A freedom of information request revealed that Oxford City Council is projected to generate a £7.7 million surplus from its congestion charge scheme. The revenue is collected through £5 daily charges and £70 penalty fines. The current system will remain in place until September 28, at which point it will be replaced by a traffic filter trial that eliminates the £5 day pass for visitors.

Local business owners and the Oxford Business Action Group report a significant decline in footfall and revenue since the charge began. According to the group, monthly spending dropped by 24% in Hollow Way, 15% in the Cowley Centre, and 12% in Jericho, leaving some independent businesses facing potential closure.

County transport boss Gareth Epps defended the scheme, stating that the income is used to improve travel and transport in and around the city. He highlighted a new £3 park and ride offer as part of these transport improvements.
