Honeywell Launches Industrial AI Platform at Dangote Refinery

Honeywell Technologies deployed its Forge Plant Cognition AI platform at the Dangote refinery in Nigeria to optimize production and develop local engineering talent.

Honeywell Technologies launched Forge Plant Cognition, an industrial AI platform, at the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals facility in Lekki, Nigeria. The refinery is the first industrial facility to deploy the system, which integrates NVIDIA AI models and Dell Technologies infrastructure to analyze real-time plant data and digital-twin simulations. The platform aims to identify production bottlenecks, reduce unplanned downtime, and improve overall throughput and reliability.

Honeywell provides preliminary estimates that the technology could generate gross annual operational benefits exceeding $60 million, or more than 29 cents per barrel, once the refinery reaches full capacity. Beyond financial gains, the initiative is designed to develop local Nigerian engineering talent and reduce reliance on external expertise, with a target for Nigerians to comprise over 70 percent of the workforce.

This deployment aligns with broader expansion goals for the refinery, as Honeywell assists the facility in increasing its capacity from 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day by 2028. Additionally, Honeywell has been selected to support the construction of a new mega-refinery in Lamu County, Kenya.
