Peter Obi Criticizes EFCC Over Detention of Supporters

Peter Obi urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to stop harassing social media activists after two of his supporters were detained over naira abuse allegations.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) detained two supporters of Peter Obi, Precious Oruche and Randy Peter, on July 15, 2026. The activists were held for approximately 11 hours at the agency's headquarters in Abuja for questioning regarding allegations of naira abuse.

Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong, representing the pair, stated that the funds in question were not actual currency but props money used for entertainment. The EFCC released the individuals around midnight and ordered them to return for further investigation on July 16.

Following the incident, Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress, criticized the actions as needless harassment. Through the Peter Obi Media Reach, Obi called on the EFCC to prioritize high-profile financial crimes and public sector corruption over the pursuit of social media commentators. A spokesperson for the group argued that using agency resources for minor infractions erodes public trust and suggests the commission is being used as a tool to stifle political dissent.
