EU Leaders Prepare to Select New ECB President

European Union leaders will choose a successor to Christine Lagarde after considering nominations from Spain and the Netherlands.

European Union leaders are preparing to select a successor for Christine Lagarde, who will step down as president of the European Central Bank in February. The Eurogroup has received two nominations for the position: Pablo Hernandez de Cos of Spain and Klaas Knot of the Netherlands.

The Eurogroup will consider the candidates on Monday, November 10. EU leaders will then make a final decision following consultations with the European Parliament and the governing council of the European Central Bank.

Spanish Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo nominated Pablo Hernandez de Cos, the general manager of the Bank for International Settlements and former governor of the Bank of Spain, describing him as an "exceptional candidate" with "renowned international prestige." Hernandez de Cos is regarded as a technical expert in monetary policy. Klaas Knot, a former central bank governor and head of the G20 Financial Stability Board, is viewed as a pragmatic economist.

The incoming president will lead the institution during a period of rising inflation driven by energy prices, economic competition from China, and strained relations with the United States.
